Science Agrees with Morning Routines. Here's Why.
The beginning of every new year brings the following question: “How can I improve myself this year?”
Many of us will commit to a new exercise regimen, a healthier diet, or one of the many other positive habits we all crave to achieve. But there’s one habit in particular that theoretically is easy to establish, but happens to be out of reach for many individuals: a proper morning routine.
Richard Branson, founder and CEO of Virgin Group, has said that a good morning routine is no different than having a positive outlook. “Over my 50 years in business I have learned that if I rise early I can achieve so much more in a day, and therefore in life. No matter where I am in the world, I try to routinely wake up at around 5am. By rising early, I’m able to do some exercise and spend time with my family, which puts me in a great mind frame before getting down to business.” Benjamin Franklin was also a big fan of morning routines and famously established the habit of waking up at 5 am and asking himself “What good shall I do this day?”.
Many successful entrepreneurs look to their morning routine as the foundation of a solid and productive day. Why is it that carving our more time at the beginning of each day is good for us? Most likely because a morning routine helps you establish a sense of control, and sets you up for a successful day.
Stop hitting snooze.
You might be familiar with hitting the snooze button one too many times only to find yourself scrambling to get ready for work. Snoozing helps promote fragmented sleep, and keeps you from getting into a healthier AM routine. Bottom line: this behavior a surefire way to start you on a stressful note and also does nothing to help you get to a place where you can successfully determine the outcome of your day.
If you carve out extra time in the morning to avoid the above situation, you’ll find yourself feeling more in control and ready to tackle your tasks for the day. Take control by committing to a morning routine.
Creating a morning routine is the first step in regaining control of your day, and eventually your life. Author David Niven, PhD details the importance of having control in his book “The Simple Secrets for Becoming Healthy, Wealthy, and Wise”: “Limited perceived control over life circumstances is associated with an increased risk of CVD mortality, independently of classical cardiovascular risk factors, and particularly among those at apparently low risk.”
Science clearly shows that you need to have more control over your life, and even the little things you do on a daily basis. In his book, Niven also mentions that “people with a sense of control in their lives, in both career and relationship, [are] 66 percent more likely to report feeling happy and satisfied.” Human beings are most comfortable when they are in control, and the easiest way to get there is by creating a morning routine that allows you to do so. By making time for yourself in the morning, you are crafting an opportunity to make the most of a clean slate. Every day has the potential to be the best day ever, so focus on achieving that through implementing a positive mindset first thing in the morning.
Try starting your day by writing out a brief plan or list of goals you want to accomplish. If consistent with this habit, you will regain control and be able to determine your own outcomes.
